The Grotta del Caudano in Val Maudagna was discovered in December 1898 when a team of workers constructing a reservoir for the Frabosa Sottana hydroelectric power station noticed a spring flowing from a crack in the rock. Their curiosity took them underground where they found a small stream at a depth of a few hundred metres. This first discovery was followed by numerous expeditions to uncover the maze of tunnels now known as one of the most extensive in Italy; they run for more than 3200 metres in a complex generated by two merging underground rivers with horizontal development on four levels and three different points of access. The visitor entrance is on the second level, at a height of 780 metres above sea level on the road to the renowned Mondolè ski complex.
The name Caudano comes from Piedmontese dialect in which “caud” means “hot”, a reference to the temperature of the subterranean river which remains unaltered at approximately 10° all year round. Another peculiarity is the flow of this river which is also constant and not influenced by surface rainfall. The abundance of water in the Frabosa cave has produced another peculiarity over the millennia: a large array of limestone conformations. Countless forms are highly evocative natural sculptures that are enriched with additional features in severe winters when cold air entering from outside forms ice concretions that spawn spectacular plays of colour and reflections. In the summer of 1961, this cave was the focus of a major scientific experiment called “700 hours underground” when ten speleologists lived underground for a month conducting a comprehensive bio-environmental study of the subterranean world.
